Our responsibility for the environment has a high priority. We have defined three key areas in which we want to achieve continuous improvement:
- CO2 reduction and energy efficiency
- Environmental management systems
- Resource management
Examples of what we have achieved so far
Reducing climate impact
By 2020 we aim to reduce our CO2 emissions by 13% compared to 2014. We have already achieved 30% of this target until 2015. The CO2 topic, however, was already in our focus before then: During 2005 and 2014 we reduced our CO2 emissions by 15%.
Our EU-wide CO2 reduction programme covers all sites and logistics and we continuously work towards achieving our objective. Carbon footprints for all major product groups are available since the end of 2014.
Environmental management systems
In our factories we implement the so-called certified energy management system ISO 50.001. This helps us to plan, implement and verify measures with the target to raise the energy efficiency in our plants.
We are currently running a pilot project with some of our contract farmers in Germany and some of our Argentinean nut farmers to reduce water consumption, energy consumption and use of agro chemicals in our potato and nut production. In this project, which is backed by university-led scientific research, we hope to gain insights that will help us to even further improve the sustainability of our potato and nut cultivation.
Our goal is to use our resources very carefully along the whole supply chain. That’s why we set up the target to reduce our edible waste in our plants by 11% (2020 vs. 2014). Our non-edible waste should be reduced by 8% until 2020 in comparison to 2014. Between 2010 and 2014 we have already lowered our edible waste by 9% and our non-edible waste by 23%.
With respect to the resource water we focus on our chips plants. Our aim is to reduce the usage of water by 7,5% (2020 vs. 2014). Between 2014 and 2010 we have already reduced our water usage by 13%.
Another key topic is the environment-friendly design of our packaging materials by reducing packaging material and increasing recyclability.
Our plans for the future
- Reduction of energy consumption by 10% (2020 vs. 2014)
- Reduction of water usage by 7,5% (2020 vs. 2014)
- Reduction of edible waste by 11% (2020 vs. 2014)
- Reduction of non-edible waste by 8% (2020 vs. 2014)
- Optimization of packaging material
